OICCI hosted an interactive session on Intellectual Property (IP) on June 20, 2025, featuring Farukh Amil, Chairman IPO-Pakistan, as the guest speaker. He was welcomed to the Chamber by Secretary General M Abdul Aleem, Managing Committee member and Managing Director Roche Pakistan Hafsa Shamsie, and Research Officer Javaria Shaikh Ismail.

The session primarily focused on the progress of Pakistan’s Patent Law Ordinance. Discussions centered around the ongoing review of the draft proposal by key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Commerce, with a view to expediting its finalization.

Participants also highlighted Pakistan’s international coordination efforts with entities such as the U.S. Mission, the UK, and the World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO, aiming to bring Pakistan’s IP framework in line with global standards.

The importance of the National IP Strategy (NIPS) was underscored, along with Pakistan’s active participation in the Inventor Assistance Program (IAP). Delays in processing patents and trademarks were discussed, with comparisons drawn to countries like Singapore and Malaysia, reinforcing the urgent need for reforms.

A strong emphasis was placed on the importance of private sector engagement in the IP ecosystem to enable innovation and business development. The session also highlighted the need for improved coordination between regulatory bodies and IP authorities, particularly in the pharmaceutical and technology sectors.

Secretary General M Abdul Aleem appreciated Chairman IPO-Pakistan for his continued commitment and efforts in reshaping the IP landscape of Pakistan. Members of the IPR Subcommittee also shared their concerns and challenges, particularly regarding IP tribunals, directly with the Chairman.

The session concluded with a renewed focus on reviewing the Patent Law Ordinance, strengthening enforcement mechanisms, and ensuring meaningful private sector involvement to make Pakistan’s IP laws more innovation-friendly.
